Deep Conditioning Hair Mask

Fabulous hair needs a little boost sometimes and a deep conditioning hair mask can infuse moisture and maximize your hair's shine. So how do you apply the best hair mask? Follow my simple steps for the perfect deep conditioning treatment.

Choose your mask. Some are made for particular types like frizzy, thin, or damaged hair. These are usually a good bet if you have specific needs. General deep conditioners provide moisture for any hair type, or natural oils like olive oil or coconut can be a great alternative to a deep conditioner and make a great natural mask.

Prepare for your at home hair mask by washing normally and toweling dry. Your hair should be damp but not dripping. Apply a thick layer of deep conditioner or natural oil. To get the best effect, follow my tricks for different types.

If you have thin or oily hair, applying your mask all over your head can leave your mane weighed down or oily immediately after. A trick to keep your locks beautiful is for people with oily hair to only apply their mask to their ends or at most an inch below the roots. When you apply a deep conditioning mask without covering the roots you give the ends of your hair moisture without over-moisturizing the top of your head near the roots.

People with thick, dry or damaged hair should apply their conditioning treatment evenly all over their head from root to tip. If you have very thick hair, this can be a challenge. To apply evenly, put your conditioning treatment on in layers to reach all sections of your head. Make three sections then apply your mask piece by piece so that you can coat your head evenly.

Once you've applied your treatment, wrap your hair in a plastic shower cap or plastic wrap. This traps some of your body heat and allows you to add more heat without washing out your conditioner. To add a little more heat, wrap a warm, damp towel around the outside of your plastic wrap. Heat opens the cuticle and lets in more moisture. Leave your deep conditioner in for 30 minutes to give it time to soak. Then wash or rinse out deep conditioner.

If hair is oily or thin, you will most likely need to wash hair after deep conditioning. People with dry, damaged or thick hair can usually just rinse out excess conditioner. This leaves your locks shiny and ready show off.

A few habits can keep hair looking great. Use a daily conditioner between deep conditioning treatments and keep up a hair mask routine. Most people should use a hair mask once a month. This is enough to boost hair's condition for most hair types. Very dry or damaged hair could benefit from using a hair mask once a week or more.
